F/X Magazine Cinefex has been one of the top chroniclers of advancements in the visual effects industry over the past 20 years. The Web component of the publication, which comes out four times a year, has quotes from James Cameron and George Lucas that will lead you to believe Cinefex is the only try source of effects journalism

Although George and James may be going a bit overboard here, you have to agree the site has one of the best databases about upcoming F/X-driven pics and which companies are working on which projects.

Clicking on A.I., for example, takes you to an elegant page that offers a good synopsis of the film, as well as informing the masses that Industrial Light & Magic is taking care of the visual razzle-dazzle, that Dennis Muren and Scott Farrar have been tapped visual effects supervisors and Michael Lantieri is the man to see for physical effects. Also in the mix are production company info, and credits for cinematographer and production designer.

This is one of the few place you can turn when you’re desperate for the right information about special effects credits. To assist frazzled researchers, pics also are cross-referenced under title, release date and effects company listing.

Browsers shouldn’t expect to find any of the mag’s comprehensive, lengthy essays on the wizardry of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but they can order back issues of the mag for $15 or so. After all, if it’s good enough for Cameron and Lucas, it has to be good enough for the rest of us.
